Unemployed. Underemployed. Foreclosed... these words are becoming all too familiar in our country (as well as the world) these days. People who have had great paying jobs and have established a great reputation within the business are all to quickly hearing the words, "we no longer need your services here anymore," or if you're lucky enough, "today will be your last day working here."
With this rise in un(der)employment, the Church is needing to decide how they will support and minister to people in need. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to care for for those in need (1 John 3:17-18) by:
This list above is by no means an exhaustive list of passages from Scripture on these areas. Scripture is clear, however, that we [the Church] have a role and responsibility to be salt and light to people in need (spirutally, financially, emotionally, etc.).
This Brown Bag Ministry is just one way in which Missio Dei Church is able to be salt and light. Since moving into our Missional Outpost on October 1, 2012 we have had in increase in random people from the community stopping by asking for help (food, money, gas, employment, etc.).We found just giving a gift card to a local grocery store was not enough. We wanted to be able to provide them with something better just as God has provided something better (the best) which is a way for eternal life in Jesus Christ.
We want to give to people as we have been given. As the unemployment and homeless population within the Lincoln-Way area increases, we want to be ready to support and minister to those who are in need in tangible ways. We want to do our best, in light of the Gospel, to give generously and be the best stewards possbile as an act of worhsip to Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to the Glory of God the Father.
Bags of food for individuals/families that stop by Missio Dei Church to help meet needs and build connections for the sake of the Gospel.
The idea would be to feed the person’s household a couple staple meals. The following are suggested items:
The items listed above can be brought to church on a Sunday morning during gathered worship or you may call the office (815-717-8006) to schedule a time to drop your items off. Once we have collected all the items for a bag, the leaders of this ministry will come in and assemble the items into bags and get them ready to be handed out.
As people come to our church throughout the week, it is our desire to be ready to hand a family or individual a bag that will sustain them a few days while they try to get their feet back under them. However, we do not view this bag as the "end all" to their problems. Ultimately these people need to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. As we hand these bags out, they will hear the Gospel story and be encouraged to join us on a Sunday morning.
We will also be handing people in need a resource for them to be able to know how to be further helped (some by Missio Dei Church as well as other great local ogranzations that are able to meet needs that our church is not able to meet).
