Get off Repeat

1

As Missio Dei is getting settled into the new year, I am excited about the opportunites that God is opening up for our Church. We are going to begin our next new members class shortly, we are training up Missional Community leaders, and as of today, the music team is going to get together soon to start working on some new songs to introduce to our congregation.

Introducing new songs is never easy. As a person who leads music for Missio Dei week in and week out, trying to teach people a new song is just simply awkward and often times scary. Introducing new songs to your church family would be like reading your term papers in college before your immediate friends and family. A lot of time and labor has gone into working on this project and the time comes to unveil "your hard work"....[chirp]....[chirp]. Crickets is pretty much all you can hear.

Maybe I am just a poor teacher or maybe it isnt the right song (I am hoping the latter is more true). The lack of response that I get from people makes me want to stick in my nice comfort zone of the "good ole' days songs". You know, the ones that are your popular go to songs when you need a good Holy Spirit fix.

In previous months however, I wonder if my fear of introducing new songs to the Church has stunted or hindered their growth in the person and work of Jesus Christ? The Gospel is so simple and plain - yet so complex and rich. Do the songs that we sing on a given Sunday morning reflect this picture of the Gospel? I would say yes, but is there more?

So I feel as it is time for a change, a time for me to grow in my leadership as a musical worship leader. Sometime in February the music team will get together and work through about 13-15 new songs. Some will be used, some may not be used. However, it is my goal as a musical worship leader to continue finding solid, Gospel-Centered, Christ exalting songs that make much of God and are singable.

If you would like to know what new tunes we will be singing, please feel free to check out the spotify playlist here (online) or in Spotify. Don't have spotify, click here, or get more information
